Want to ride one of the off roading world’s most famous trails?
Located on BLM land just three miles from the center of Moab, Utah, Hell’s Revenge has been well-known for it’s challenging obstacles for many years.
The Basics
The trail is located inside United States BLM land and entry costs $5 per vehicle.
It’s about 6.5 miles long and usually takes 2-3 hours to complete. However, if you choose to try some of the optional obstacles, it may take longer!
The trail is rated 6/10, but is 8/10 if you attempt the other obstacles.
When Should You Go?
Spring and Fall are the best times to go because of the weather. Otherwise summer is hot and winter is cold and possible snowy.
There are frequently events that might bring large groups of vehicles and people to the trail, like Easter Jeep Safari.
If you’re hoping for a quiet ride through the country, EJS is the wrong time to go!
What Vehicles Are Best?
To successfully get through the trail, most people need:
- Four wheel drive
- Good ground clearance
- 33-35" tires
- Lockers are recommended
Now, can you do the trail with less? Are you a decent off road driver? You’re in luck!
Many weird and wonderful vehicles have attempted Hell’s Revenge, or parts of it, and lived to tell the trail.
Note that almost all of those vehicles have all-terrain tires and decent ground clearance.
Also, don’t forget to air down!
Obstacles
Hell’s Gate
The infamous Hell’s Gate is an optional obstacle at the north end of the trail. It’s an incredibly steep notch climb.

Most vehicles have difficulty near the top. Tire placement here is crucial due to holes in the rock that drop the driver rear tire, throwing the whole rig off balance. When that happens, drivers will often flop onto their side - or some roll all the way to the bottom.

Tip-Over Challenge
This obstacle will have you leaning at some funny angles, but its 3.5/10 rating means it should be doable for vehicles that are closer to stock.

However, that’s not always the case! Although the slickrock of Moab usually offers excellent traction, if there is sand on the rock for whatever reason you may actually end up sliding!

Don’t do that!
The Escalator
The Escalator is sort of like a series of steps.

Expect it to be a little easier than Hell’s Gate. A roll here would not have the potential consequences of rolling on Hell’s Gate either.
Hot Tubs
The Hot Tubs can be tricky!
Getting in is easy. It’s getting out that is the problem.

Usually the driver needs to make several attempts to get out. To complicate matters, sometimes there is water and some mud at the bottom. This makes your tires wet so that they don’t have as much traction.
If you pick the wrong line, you might get off balance and flip over backwards!

The only Hot Tub currently open to the public is Mickey’s Hot Tub.
