Subarus on Hell's Revenge in Moab

So you probably know that Subarus are pretty tough and have all wheel drive. But would you take one on Hell’s Revenge in Moab?

Normally, we see Jeeps and other 4x4s on 33 inch and up tires on this trail, but we found five Subarus that took on the trail without exploding.

Old School Legacy Wagon Dips Into a Tub

This old school Subaru Legacy wagon slips into one of the tubs (not Devil’s Hot Tub, that would be crazy) and out the other side.

While there are no other action shots of this wagon doing the trail, it’s a lot of slickrock just to get to this location!

1992 Subaru Legacy wagons came from the factory with all wheel drive and either an auto or manual transmission. The engine was either a 130hp 4 cylinder, although Subaru offered a 160hp turbocharged 4 cylinder in 1993.

Subaru Crosstrek Climbs Out of a Hot Tub

This lifted Crosstrek does the whole trail and skips most of the harder obstacles. However, the driver does take it down into one of the Hot Tubs!

The Hot Tubs are usually difficult to get out of and have caused more than one vehicle to do a hard roll. The toughest part tends to be the last bit of the climb at the end, especially when it’s wet.

The Subaru is lifted with long travel coilovers, F44 front and rear bumpers, a sway bar delete kit, and Toyo All Terrain tires.

Bumpers help the approach and departure angles, removing the sway bar allows the suspension to flex, and this trail needs a good set of ATs!

The Crosstrek did not have a locker at the time of doing the trail.

This is NOT helpful when you want to exit a Moab hot tub, but would make the Subaru a lot more capable on this and other obstacles.

Third Gen Subaru Outback Gets Beat

Want to know what an almost stock Subaru can really do on Hell’s Revenge?

This Outback attempts every obstacle on the trail. No bypasses!

It gets pretty brutal and has a little help from some Jeeps.

For protection it has sort of a front bumper slide and rock sliders. That’s about it.

The Outback makes it part way up Hell’s Gate before it runs out of power but then gets pulled the last bit up by a Jeep.

It’s able to do two out of three hot tubs.

And it manages to come crashing down the Escalator.

It doesn’t quite make it back up, though!

Unlikely Hero: Subaru Tackles Hell’s Revenge

A modified Subaru Legacy sedan has accomplished what many think impossible - completing Hell’s Revenge.

Built by Chris, a dental technician with off-road aspirations, this unconventional trail warrior bypassed the most extreme obstacles while still navigating the trail’s intimidating slickrock terrain.

The sedan’s transformation includes strategic upgrades:

Outback struts with 1/2" spacers, Outback rear upper control arms and subframe spacers, oversized Yokohama Geolander tires, modified front bumper for improved approach angle, and protective skid plates.

Purists might focus the skipped obstacles.

But simply piloting a sedan through a trail that usually sees big tires and winches is an impressive achievement.

The Legacy proves that with the right mods and driving skills, unexpected vehicles can conquer trails typically reserved for purpose-built 4x4s.
